The Best Years of Your Life

The Best Years of Your Life

Now we’ve all been told that your college years are the best years of your life. Those deceptively short four years are suppose to bring growth in all sectors of your well-being. You’re suppose to meet you bridesmaids/groomsmen, create those college party memories, and most likely, you’ll find your soul mate. All I have to say is I hope, nay, pray that my college years are not the best years of my life. I pray there are many fruitful years to come. Lets face it, we college kids are just children in a bigger sandbox. There may be a few less rules and no adult supervision, but the toys are still the same: temptation, greed, lust, pride… the list goes on and on. We trick our brains into thinking that these things bring satisfaction and fulfillment when in reality they slowly lead us down the road to loneliness, emptiness, and despair. Why do adults tell us these things are amazing? Why do they encourage us to embrace the ‘college lifestyle’ and to ‘find ourselves’? They have obviously lived that lifestyle, have ‘found themselves’, and still aren’t fufilled. They are yearning for something they think they’ve lost, when in reality, they never had it in the first place. They feel the emptiness, the loneliness, and the despair that fill us when we live our lives for foolish and temporary things. They are living their lives looking at the past instead of setting their eyes on eternity. When we set our eyes on things eternal, we no longer live for hedonistic reasons. We no longer live for the next drink, the next hook-up, the next fix. We live day by day with our eyes and our hearts set on the coming days of Glory, where there is no suffering, no loneliness, no despair. The days where we’ll live eternally with our heavenly Father. So no, these are not the best years of my life. I know the best years are yet to come and I am looking forward to them with such a hope and a joy! Until then, I will ‘find myself’ in Christ and take life one day at a time.

  1. This really is a beautiful post. Thanks for the encouraging words of Truth. I must remind myself not to worry about these temporary stresses or fleeting joys. It was a good message to hear today. 🙂

  2. Love the song! You have been taught well. Sometimes, even when all the choices you make are supposedly the “right ones” there will always be a yearning for our true home. an ache to be held in the arms of our saviour.
