Why You Should Stop Worrying About What You Eat

Recently my Facebook news feed has been filled with posts and articles about the dangers of sugar, caffeine, GMOs, corn syrup, non-organic, pesticide-riddled, and [insert here] foods. I’ve read some of these articles but most of them I pass by. I don’t really care about the dangers of sugar. I’m not worried about what GMOs are doing to my body. Why, you ask? Because God is still in control. He is bigger than GMOs. He is bigger than sugar. He is bigger than pesticides. Eating a non-organic apple is not going to stop Christ from using me to further His plans. There is nothing wrong with wanting to eat healthy. Heck, I am growing an all-natural garden in my backyard. But when it gets to the point of obsession or just to the point of worrying about it, that is when it becomes sin. You may have heard food referred to as an idol. Well, that idol can take many forms. Whether you are over-eating, under-eating, never eating, or always watching what you eat, food has a special control over us. This is an idol I am quite familiar with. I struggled for a while with orthorexia nervosa (the obsession with eating healthy) which ultimately led to a battle with borderline anorexia. I was obsessed with making sure only healthy things went into my body. My desire to be ‘healthier’ created the most unhealthy year and a half of my life.

Matthew 6:25 – 34 says, “Therefore I tell you, do not worry about your life, what you will eat or drink; or about your body, what you will wear. Is not life more important than food, and the body more important than clothes?  Look at the birds of the air; they do not sow or reap or store away in barns, and yet your heavenly Father feeds them. Are you not much more valuable than they?  Who of you by worrying can add a single hour to his life ?  “And why do you worry about clothes? See how the lilies of the field grow. They do not labor or spin.  Yet I tell you that not even Solomon in all his splendor was dressed like one of these.  If that is how God clothes the grass of the field, which is here today and tomorrow is thrown into the fire, will he not much more clothe you, O you of little faith?  So do not worry, saying, ‘What shall we eat?’ or ‘What shall we drink?’ or ‘What shall we wear?’  For the pagans run after all these things, and your heavenly Father knows that you need them.  But seek first his kingdom and his righteousness, and all these things will be given to you as well.  Therefore do not worry about tomorrow, for tomorrow will worry about itself. Each day has enough trouble of its own.”

The Lord cares for you. He made us in His image. Yes, He wants us to be healthy and to treat our bodies as temples (1 Corinthians 6:19), but what truly matters most to God is our relationship with Him.  So if you can help it, don’t gorge yourself on twinkies (RIP) and if you can afford it, organic food is great! Everything in moderation. But remember, your spiritual health is what’s most important.
